APQP 3rd Edition
APQP 3rd Edition
The APQP and Control Plan manuals were published on 1 March 2024. The AIAG APQP manual is now on 3rd edition (2024). The last version (i.e.2nd edition) was published way back in year 2008. It’s a long overdue update as project management methods for introducing new products has since evolved. This evolvement is to address challenges for automotive industry such as autonomous driving technology, increase emphasis on software application in cars, energy transition to hybrid (HEV, PHEVs, etc.) and new energy source for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (HFCV).
The key changes for APQP manual are listed in summary below:
Primary Changes for APQP:
- Emphasis on Leadership
- Early focus in sourcing with attention given to high-risk supplier evaluation
- Revised Gated Review with 6 gates and gate checklists
- Risk Management in the APQP project – renewed interest
- APQP Program Metrics
Other notable changes for APQP:
- Change Management
- Capacity planning with OEE
- Error-Proofing and Mistake-proofing
Control Plan 1st Edition
Control Plan 1st Edition
The Control Plan manual is published as a standalone manual for the first time. Industry observers noted that this might make it more versatile for future updates. The control plan format itself only receive minor changes. One is the additional stage for ‘safe-launch’ and the other is the addition of ownership column to display the person responsible for the process.
The main changes to control plans are:
- Control methods supporting its implementation on the shopfloor such as reverse FMEA and Layered Process Audits (LPAs)
- Clarification over options to have the control plans for the context of highly automated manufacturing environment, pass through characteristics (PTCs), black box processes, etc.
