In many of FMEA workshops that we have run in the last six months, one acronym which usually raises the curiosity is the ‘FMEA-MSR’. The phrase ‘MSR’ stands for Monitoring and System Response. It is a new, complementary FMEA introduced as an add-on to Design FMEA.
Before we get too excited and start cracking our knuckles to get into this, let’s talk about what kind of product design might require FMEA-MSR. For a start, not everyone who practices design FMEA need to perform the FMEA-MSR by default.
The primary focus of FMEA-MSR is to look at potential failures under a vehicle operating or maintenance condition in the field. Modern cars today are equipped with self-diagnostic and monitoring systems; from simple tyre pressure monitoring system to smart self-driving system. While these diagnostic system works well in the past as drivers aid, more of them will become integrated as autonomous driving becomes more common. That’s where engineers start to get worried. Imagine a smart city braking mechanism in a car that miscalculates and does not break upon sensing a pedestrian crossing the road in a self-driving vehicle. Well that’s wehre FMEA-MSR steps in to address this area of potential failures.
Well, if the nature of what you design as a product does not contain any active or passive monitoring and response system, then obviously there is no need to perform FMEA-MSR. Well, for once it’s good that it’s not meant for everyone!
